Programme note

The general structure is made up of five large parts.

First part - Prologue - a very long bass flute solo, meditative in character, slowly climbs through the entire range of the instrument, from the low to the extreme high register.

Second part - description of light as a purely physical phenomenon, with its particles and its multiple undulatory movements. This part justifies the use of the word "Irisation" in the title by the highly-colored evocation of light being decomposed through a prism.

Third part - confrontation of three character-types :
• the first (in the low instruments of the orchestra) poses existential questions, he is worried, anxious, anguished.
• the second responds to the first in a calm and serene way, with a highly linear choral sung by a soprano, doubled at the unison in the horns and cellos; this choral is harmonized by woodwinds playing in the high register.
• the third (in the solo flute) is unstable and oscillates between the first two.

Fourth part - this is the most extensive part. Its construction is based on the idea of an inversion of tension between the soprano and the orchestra (opposition of line and mass). If the soloist initially imposes her tension through rapid, highly ornamented, quasi-mechanical phrases, these evolve with rhythmic values increasingly long and great purity of line. Inversely, the orchestra becomes progressively denser through multiplication of its harmonies, like a biological cell in a state of expansion. The dilation progresses to such an extent that, at the extreme end of this section, the musical material suddenly shatters; at this point, the orchestra is treated like a raw material which can be broken, modeled or carved, as a sculptor might do with a great block of stone.

Fifth part - slow rise toward the light. Under the violence of the preceding explosion, all the materials suddenly collapse into the extreme low register of the orchestra. At this point, an extremely slow climb through the registers begins (with, at the outset, an ascension in the metal percussion), which culminates in the extreme high register, toward the light. Toward the middle of this slow ascension, a love-hymn, expressed by the two soloists with interconnected counterpoints, is superimposed; this hymn justifies the work’s dedication. The work finishes by taking up the musical elements of the 2nd part again, in an atmosphere of great serenity: - the call of the Light - contemplation - plenitude -.

Poem

Décharge de l'effort fossile
Geste articulé loin des forces acides
Poser le pied par le sang
    Cri
    Souffle à vif
    Io !
Intervalle réciproque jeté au gouffre du regard

Subitement
  Bousculé
    Rétréci

         Ecart en relief

Jeu du recul interpolé
L'acuité pénètre en lueur inouïe

  Brèche
    Fissure
      Balancement réciproque ajouré
Irisation plénitude secouée de la mémoire

Au travers glisse l'immobilité

         Miroir d'incertitude
         Zénith digital
         Transparence probable

      "L'instant percuté saigne"

Harry HALBREICH, Revue Crescendo, Jeune musique française Joker, 1995
